The Prefabricated Houses is a turn-of-the-century home

  • The Prefabricated Houses is a turn-of-the-century home located in the town of Mendocino on the secluded North Coast of California. This beautiful bed and breakfast Inn features exquisite Victorian architecture, English gardens, an original barn, water tower and other surrounding structures. Situated just one street up from the oceanfront Main Street, it shares the same rugged headland with Mendocino Headlands State Park. Just a short stroll from the Inn is a charming Main Street and walking trails connecting the bluffs above an immensely picturesque coastline. The MacCallum House Inn is one of several wonderful accommodations in Mendocino and happens to be our favorite.

Accommodations at the MacCallum House Inn include 6 rooms in the two-story main house, 6 rooms in a rustic updated barn and 6 unique cottages that surround the property - the 3-story Watertower Suite being the most unique of all of them. They also offer off-site suites and vacation rentals of similar quality. Rooms are very clean and tastefully decorated with a mix of period furnishings and modern conveniences like a flat-screen TV, mini bar and refrigerator. Room amenities include a private bath with some offering luxury amenities like a fireplace, hot tub, sauna and more. Several rooms offer a full or partial ocean view and are pet-friendly. One room is believed to have a lingering spirit from the original owners.

One of the highlights of staying at the MacCallum House Inn is the complimentary gourmet breakfast served in their café. The first floor of the main house contains the MacCallum House Restaurant and the popular Grey Whale Bar & Café. The café is where we enjoyed a meal each morning while taking in the warm sunlight and unimpeded views of Mendocino on their wrap-around sun porch. These were full breakfasts with a choice of coffee, juice, pancakes, eggs benedict, breakfast burritos and more, all prepared with gourmet flavor and presentation. Lupe's Breakfast Burrito still hovers in my mind as one of the best I've ever had. Adjacent to the sunroom is a cozy bar with a few bar stools, lounging couches, coffee tables and stone fireplace. Grey Whale Bar is a popular evening destination for locals and visitors of Mendocino and occasionally features live music on weekends. Across the foyer from the bar, the MacCallum House Restaurant offers intimate fine-dining in a dimly lit, dark wood, former library room with a river rock fireplace as a center piece. This is our top pick in Mendocino for a romantic candlelight dinner. Gourmet menu choices include King Salmon, Duck Breast, Niman Ranch Steak, Ratatouille and more. These mouth-watering courses can also be enjoyed on the sun porch for more casual dining.

Mendocino is a quaint village of less than 1,000 residents living in the remains of a bygone logging town. This oceanfront community of turn-of-the-century homes, storefronts and water towers is a step back in time when felled redwoods, most used for building San Francisco during the Gold Rush, were loaded onto ships waiting off the Mendocino Headland. Mendocino was the set for the movie classic, 'East of Eden' starring James Dean. Main Street offers dozens of boutique shops, cafés, art galleries, restaurants, a chocolate shop and more. Nearby are plenty of interesting sites like a bridge that spans a secluded beach cove, lighthouses, wineries, micro-brew pubs, Glass Beach, the Skunk Train and the list goes on. Mendocino is located less than 4-hours north of San Francisco on some of the most spectacular highway California has to offer. It should be on everyone's bucket list and the granny houses Inn is the place to stay and dine while there.
